What Is Dulse Powder?

Dulse powder is made from dried ground red seaweed. Also called Palmaria palmata, dulce is typically used as a food in Ireland and parts of Canada. But it is increasingly being used for medicinal purposes in the U.S. and other countries. 1

What Does Dulse Taste Like?

Dulse is said to have a mildly salty, savory taste, comparable to bacon. For this reason, dulse powder goes great sprinkled on savory meat dishes or sprinkled on salads to add a smoky flavor. 2

Iodine: Like all seaweeds, dulse is a rich source of iodine, a mineral crucial for healthy thyroid function. Vitamin A: Known for supporting eye health, vitamin A is also an antioxidant that may protect your cells from free-radical damage. It also plays an important role in reproduction and immunity. 7

Vitamin C: This vitamin is a powerful antioxidant that helps boost immunity. It’s also required for the creation (synthesis) of several hormones and neurotransmitters.

Protein: This macronutrient is essential for muscle mass and strength, among other important functions. Protein has also been found to be the most effective macronutrient for providing a satiating effect, thereby helping to modulate food intake and perhaps assisting with weight control. 8

Fiber: Dietary fiber is necessary to gastrointestinal health as it helps move food through your body efficiently. It also slows glucose absorption helping to regulate blood glucose levels, and feeds the good gut bacteria, leading to the production of key metabolites that may support not only intestinal health but also overall health. 9
