Kelp (Rockweed) Powder

If you’re looking for a potent superfood, Kelp (Rockweed) powder is IT! Kelp, also called Rockweed or Norwegian kelp, is a brown algae that grows in the sea. Algae are single-celled forms that do not have stems or roots. They grow from the nutrients in the water and energy from sunshine. (Just like plants on land, algae need the sun’s energy to grow.) 1

Kelp is loaded with health-sustaining nutrients, containing an estimated 10 times the minerals of plants grown above ground in soil. 2

Kelp powder is commonly used to add nutritional value to the diet. Many people also use kelp powder as an alternative medicine to ease certain health issues.

What Are The Benefits of Kelp?

Here are just a few of the many benefits of kelp.

Rich in Nutrients

Kelp is rich in vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and other nutrients that support health. A 100 gram serving ( approximately 1 ¼ cups) of raw kelp is just 43 calories yet supplies a host of beneficial nutrients, including: 3

  1. Fat: 0.6 g
  2. Carbs: 9.6 g
  3. Protein: 1.7 g
  4. Fiber: 1.3 g
  5. Choline: 12.8 mg
  6. Folate: 180.00 mcg
  7. Pantothenic Acid: 0.642 mg (13% of the recommended daily value)
  8. Riboflavin: 0.150 mg (12% DV)
  9. Thiamin: 0.050 mg
  10. Vitamin K: 66.0 mcg (55% DV)
  11. Calcium: 168.00 mg (13% DV)

  13. Iron: 2.85 mg (16% DV)
  14. Magnesium: 121.00 mg (30% DV)
  15. Potassium: 89.00 mg

May Help Support Thyroid Function

One gram of raw kelp contains 1,800mcg - 2,500mcg of iodine, well above the recommended daily value of 150 mcg for adults. 4

The thyroid controls metabolism, regulates energy levels, manages several hormones, and other important functions. Iodine is essential for proper thyroid function, and since the body doesn’t make iodine, you must get this mineral through your diet.

Kelp (Rockweed) powder is a great way to get iodine, and studies indicate kelp supplementation may increase thyroid stimulating hormone. 5

But don’t think more is better. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) adults should consume no more than 1,000 mcg of iodine per day. Consuming too much iodine can cause thyroid dysfunction and a host of unpleasant symptoms. 6

May Help Manage Weight And Diabetes

Research suggests that kelp may help manage two factors that can lead to type 2 diabetes -- elevated blood glucose levels and being overweight.

Kelp contains a trace mineral called vanadium that has consistently been observed in research studies to have an “insulin-like” effect in lowering blood glucose levels. In fact, many people supplement with vanadium specifically to support healthy blood glucose levels. 7

Plus, kelp contains an antioxidant called fucoxanthin that studies suggest may help burn fat and reduce the risk for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other conditions, as well as reduce inflammation. Unfortunately, there are few human studies on fucoxanthin, so more research is needed to verify any fat-burning benefits. 8
