Sea buckthorn juice powder is perhaps one of the lesser known superfoods, but it’s gaining in popularity.
Native to Europe and Asia, sea buckthorn is a hardy shrub that produces orange-yellow berries. Its oil and berries have long been used for food, cosmetics, and several health conditions. 1
The powder is made from dehydrated sea buckthorn berries that are then ground into a fine powder, and it contains a similar nutrient profile as the juice.

Sea Buckthorn is also a rich source of healthy fatty acids. In fact, it is the only seed oil that contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids at a ratio of 1:1, making it a beneficial addition to any diet. (The fruit as well as its seeds is enriched with essential oils.) 3
Sea buckthorn has been used as a natural remedy for the following health conditions:
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes Infographic Text:
Type 2 diabetes, also called adult-onset diabetes. After eating, blood sugar rises. The pancreas releases insulin into the bloodstream. If too much insulin is continually circulating in the bloodstream, glucose receptors do not respond properly to normal levels of insulin. This is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance contributes to high glucose levels in the blood.

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the cells either resist insulin’s signal to absorb glucose from the blood, or the pancreas does not produce an adequate amount of insulin. Either way, it is a progressive disease unless proactive steps are taken to stabilize or reverse it. Research shows sea buckthorn may be a useful weapon to use against this disease.
In a 10-week study, mice given sea buckthorn juice showed a significant increase in blood glucose tolerance and integrity of pancreatic tissue. They also demonstrated a decrease in weight and in blood glucose levels. 4
Heart Disease

High blood pressure (hypertension) and abnormal cholesterol levels are two major risk factors for heart disease. Seems the little sea buckthorn berries may help modify these risk factors, thereby defending against heart disease. Studies show that sea buckthorn may have considerable cholesterol-lowering effects. It may also lower triglyceride levels. There is also some evidence that sea buckthorn may help lower blood pressure, and for this reason, it’s not advisable to take it if you suffer from low blood pressure, as it may cause BP to drop too low. 5, 6, 7
Cancer
Sea buckthorn contains bioactive compounds that have anti-cancer properties. For instance, thanks partly to its antioxidant content and its immune-boosting effect, an extract of sea buckthorn has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors. Additionally, sea buckthorn juice in particular has been shown to naturally kill certain types of cancer cells. 8
